Some Series I Actually Do Need To Finish in 2019

The me I was in 2016, when I turned fifteen, would not have recognized me now. She had twenty books on her TBR shelf and that was a huge problem because she only read like one book a week. She had no self esteem. She definitely did not have a blog that she posted on four times a week. So she would probably be very glad to know that we’re still the same in one aspect: I! Have! So! Much! Trouble! Starting! Series!

So in this post, I decided to go through some of the series I’m planning on finishing, starting, and continuing in 2019.

While preparing for this post, I discovered two posts made last year that seemed relevant, one from January and one from May. One contained series I wanted to start, while one contained series I wanted to continue. **Books carrying over from either of these posts will be marked with a 🏳️‍🌈.

A list of books I knocked out from the post in January include:

There were originally ten series on this post, and this post was actually meant to be series I was finishing in 2018, so there being any series remaining off this list is somewhat shameful. I did also DNF Red Sister by Mark Lawrence, meaning I finished my run on five series and made progress on a sixth; however, there are four series left to complete.

A list of books I knocked out from the post in May include:

There were also a couple books I DNFed, including Wildcard by Marie Lu & The Queen of Crows by Myke Cole, and several anticipated which I have simply decided to not read, including Soul of Stars by Ashley Poston, Undying by Amie Kaufman, Evermore by Sara Holland (I really liked this debut but I’ve heard mixed things), and Saga, Vol. 9 by Brian K Vaugn and Fiona Staples.

series w/ one book left

Song of the Dead (Reign of the Fallen, #2) by Sarah Glenn Marsh
✨ Okay, the first book wasn’t my favorite thing ever, but it had great vibes and excellent characters. I want to see where Marsh goes, how she escalates the tension.

Thunderhead (Scythe, #2) by Neal Shusterman 🏳️‍🌈
✨ I don’t know why I haven’t read this yet. I really enjoyed book one and I just… have not been in the mood for this?

Defy the Worlds (Defy the Stars, #2) by Claudia Gray 🏳️‍🌈
✨ I am tragically obsessed with this. It is romantic scifi [ugh] but it’s actually a very thoughtful meditation on the nature of humanity and um, I loved it. Please show up soon, book.

Muse of Nightmares (Strange the Dreamer, #2) by Laini Taylor 🏳️‍🌈
I am currently dying over how scared I am of this. Sarai. Holy shit, you have to be okay. I would die for you.

series w/ two books left

A Closed & Common Orbit (Small Angry Planet, #2-#3) by Becky Chambers 🏳️‍🌈
✨ The sequel to one of my favorite books of last year, and I just keep needing to be in the right mood for it, and I just have not been. This book requires me to be in the most blessed state of mind and also a state of mind where I’m okay with taking twenty years to read a book and love it anyway.

The Girl in the Tower (Winternight, #2-#3) by Katherine Arden 🏳️‍🌈
✨ This series is a very aestheticy winter wonderland and I just cannot wait to get to the next book. I think I need to order a copy, though: the hardcover editions of book two have now departed stores!!

Valiant (Tithe, #2) by Holly Black
✨ I enjoyed but was not in love with Tithe, the first book in this series. But as I’ve now read five books by this author and five-starred three of them, I want to make Holly one of my entirely-read authors.

ongoing series I’m behind on

Monstress, Vol. 3 by Marjorie M. Liu and Sana Takeda 🏳️‍🌈
✨ I love this series entirely populated by gaysians. Well, actually, I keep forgetting the plot, but I love the art so much. Of course I’m reading it.

Escaping From Houdini (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #3) by Kerri Maniscalco 🏳️‍🌈
I somewhat enjoyed my recent binge of this series and am excited to see it continue, although I am getting concerned about um…. the length?

In An Absent Dream (Every Heart a Doorway, #4) by Seanan McGuire 🏳️‍🌈
This just released a couple of weeks ago and I am desperately excited. This novella series is one of my favorites and I am so excited that it has received so much acclaim.

Ruse by Cindy Pon (Want, #2) | 12 Mar 2019
✨ You know, I was a little meh on book one, but the more I think about it the more I appreciate what it was doing. Want was a science-fiction action adventure, and while it maybe wasn’t totally my thing, it was a lot of fun and I want to see more of Daiyu.

Return of the Thief (The Queen’s Thief, #6) | 11 Mar 2019
✨ I cannot wait to finish this series, but either way, may I just say: the covers of this series are so excellent. holy shit.

The Hound of Justice (Janet Watson, #2) by Claire O’Dell | 30 Jul 2019
✨ This Sherlock Holmes retelling began on such a fantastic note, and I know no one is talking about it, but god, you all need to read this series immediately.

Darkdawn (Nevernight, #3) by Jay Kristoff | 3 Sep 2019
✨ I mean, come on, I love this series, I have loved the last two books, and I cannot wait for the conclusion. AND WHAT A GOOD COVER.

Wayward Son (Carry On, #2) by Rainbow Rowell | 2019
✨ I was a sort-of fan of Carry On, and at least found it entertaining enough to continue on with this sequel. Also, I just think this cover is absolutely amazing. The suit?? God.

Stormsong (Kingston Cycle, #2) by C.L. Polk | 11 Feb 2020
✨ This sequel is about the sister of one of the first book’s main characters and it’s amazing and I absolutely loved it.

I own two books

The Black Tides of Heaven (Tensorate, #1-4) by J.Y. Yang 🏳️‍🌈
✨ I’ve heard such fantastic things about this novella series, and plan to read it next month just to get started! I own the first two books and am excited to read the rest.

The Star-Touched Queen (Star Touched Queen #1-#2) Roshani Chokshi
✨ Things I know about this series, which I own in its entirety, include:
→great atmospheric writing
→it’s a Hades and Persephone retelling
…and based off all of those qualities, I am in love with it.

The Book of the Unnamed Midwife (Road to Etta, #1-#3) by Meg Elison
✨ I am reading this because my friend Melanie sent me two copies last year! This is one of her favorite books and I completely trust her judgement, and I can’t wait to get to these two first books, which I own, and then the third.

Screen Shot 2019-01-13 at 11.38.47 PM.png
duologies, owned

False Hearts (False Hearts #1-2) by Laura Lam 🏳️‍🌈
✨ I have wanted to read something by this author for so long! This is suspense-y speculative fiction, which I’ve been getting more into recently — remember Into the Drowning Deep?

Renegades (Renegades, #1-#2) by Marissa Meyer
✨ I’ve read Meyer’s only other series in full, so why not continue seeing where her work goes? I own a copy of the first book in this series (plus, my library has the audiobook!) and I’m really hoping I enjoy reading it.

The Traitor Baru Cormorant (Baru Cormorant, #1-#2) by Seth Dickinson
✨ This is a fantasy series about a very morally grey gay girl. And hey, it sounds really cool, right? As Mary has said, if you’re a fan of political intrigue & fierce female characters, this is a book for you! And you know what? I can get behind that. Also, I own book one.

Screen Shot 2019-01-13 at 11.40.38 PM.png
trilogies, owned

The Knife of Never Letting Go (Knife of Never Letting Go, #1-3) by Patrick Ness 🏳️‍🌈
✨ This is the book that I have owned the longest of any book on my shelf — I think it is the only book I bought in 2016 that I still own. I think this series just looks super long?

Timekeeper (Timekeeper, #1-#3) by Tara Sim
✨ this book is about a clock spirit, and it’s gay historical fiction, and I’m just? really excited to read it? I’ve sort of been waiting to get into this series until the whole thing came out in paperback, as I own the first book in its (absolutely gorgeous) paperback edition.

The Winner’s Curse (Winner’s Trilogy #1-3) by Marie Rutkoski 🏳️‍🌈
✨ This series is supposed to have a really cool girl leader! Maybe some angst! A lot of taking down slavery! A series that is known for having a mediocre first book and great second book, which is honestly my complete type! Also, why aren’t any of these books called The Loser’s Kiss?

Screen Shot 2019-01-13 at 11.42.01 PM.png
series not owned

White Cat (Curse Workers, #1-3) by Holly Black
✨ Again, Holly Black is one of a couple of authors I consider faves and need to just finish reading All The Books By. This series is about crime!! If I finish all five of the Holly Black books on this list you all need to bow to me.

The Archived (Archived, #1-#2) by Victoria Schwab
✨ I’ve been trying to read all of Victoria Schwab’s modern-era releases over the last two years, and for once? it WORKED. Of her four YA & Adult series, I have read three (three!!) in entirety, with the exception of only this. If I read City of Ghosts and this duology by the end of this year, I will have read ten of her books!! Absurd and ridiculous and I am so happy.

The Bone Witch (The Bone Witch, #1-#3) by Rin Chupeco
✨ I know this one is a bit more polarizing, but I’ve heard amazing things about this from Melanie, and given that an audiobook is available at my library, I’m really really excited to see what I think about it!!

other series I might also get into this year, or at some point:

Comment and let me know if you’re anticipating any of these! Any sequels to faves? Any sequels to least faves? Any new finds? Tell me your thoughts!watercolor-2087454_960_720Blog | Goodreads | Twitter | Youtube

  1. The Witchmark sequel has been renamed! I didn’t notice that. Anyway, between Ruse, Stormsong and The Weight of the Stars, I love the trend of m/f and m/m books I liked getting f/f sequels.
I need to reread The Bone Witch this year (it’s really slow-paced, but the descriptions are really nice and I think the sequels have a lot of potential) and I want to start Nevernight. And I’m going to try reading The Traitor Baru Cormorant this year too, even though I’m not sure I’m going to like anything about it.
I remember reading Valiant and being really disturbed by it, so much that I DNFed that series, but I was also 14, so it probably doesn’t mean much.
And I hope you like The Star-Touched Queen and Tensorate series!

    1. I’m so loving that trend. I think publishers and authors have both finally figured out that that f/f sells? and god bless that.

I’m glad you liked the Bone Witch too; even more hyped now! And I hadn’t heard anything about Valiant, so I guess we’ll see how I feel? I eventually want to read every Holly Black so we’ll see how that goes.

I’m super excited for both of those and your recs made me prioritize both, so thank you!! ❤

  3. the way you feel about A Closed and Common orbit requiring you to be in a blessed state of mind is literally me with the wicked king right now. ALSO, UM I DIDNT LIKE THE STAR TOUCHED QUEEN bc it was very prose-y and not very plot-y but maybe you’d like it since you liked Wild Beauty??? (the sequel sounds so much better tho) ALSO!!!!!! The Winners Curse is literally so freaking amazing and it’s one of my favorite series!!!!!!! Ahhhh I wanna scream just thinking about it.

  4. Ugh, I’m also the worst about reading series. It’s honestly just because when you finish one book, the next one immediately goes on your tbr, so it never feels like you’re making any progress.

I am SO STRESSED for Wayward Son. I loved Carry On, and my children got a happy ending, and everything was nice and perfect and good. And then !! “this will end in flames”?? I DO NOT NEED IT OR WANT IT. but i’ll read it, of course.

Ahhh, I also reallllly need to start Scythe. And The Magicians. And anything by V.E. Schwab. Because I have not, uh, read anything by V.E. Schwab. (shhh.)

  5. I love these posts! Definitely a missed opportunity with. I am so interested to see how you like The Winner’s Curse! I really enjoyed the first book because of the angst and the main character, it totally made up for the rest of it. The Loser’s Kiss title is truly a missed opportunity. Oh and I cannot wait to read The Girl in the Tower!!!

  6. There are so many series that I have to finish and start that I don’t even know where to start on this list! But we have so many in common so if you want to buddy read any of them, I am so down! (I always love buddy reads)
