So this month was a wild ride. I flew across the country for a month. There was a writing camp! It was amazing.

There was also a lot of cousin time!! I saw my cousin who I haven’t seen since last year, which was amazing. And I went to the beach, which was a ton of fun.

 —Favorite Music

I found two new cast albums to love, School of Rock and the upcoming Moulin Rouge! Reviews for both of these shows will be coming up soon, but until then, you can find the School of Rock soundtrack here [it’s a BANGER] and a preview of Aaron Tveit singing Come What May here [but honestly just wait till that Toxic/Bad Romance mashup drops, y’all are not READY].

I actually listened to… probably more music this month than any other month. I at one point had a lengthy breakup playlist. Which you can find here because I’m a human disaster.

But I also had two favorite albums this month.

Red

Red, Taylor Swift (2012)

My old fave and the perfect album to listen to for everything from sadness to loneliness to happiness. But this album is upsetting to me on a deep level of my soul. All Too Well is the melancholy breakup song of my dreams. I Almost Do is so upsetting. State of Grace is a perfect balance. The Last Time kills me. Treacherous is gorgeous..

Strange Desire, Bleachers (2014)

A new discovery, and this is… a banger. Wild Heart and Rollercoaster are both jams of epic proportions. Reckless Love is sad and gorgeous. Shadow is melancholy in just the right way for my mood this month. I Want To Get Better is an anthem of recovery. Wake Me kills me on a level I cannot explain. And I’m Ready To Move On keeps growing on me, every day.

The Handmaiden (2016) | ★★★★★

I knew this was going to be good but that was absolutely the most wild fucking ride I have ever taken in my life. I don’t even think it’s Allowed for me to talk about it because the plot twists and turns in so many places, but I knew the ending and I STILL was shocked at every turn. the leads have so much chemistry and both act their parts with so much reality. I screamed like eight times watching this fucking movie. jesus I cannot believe how fucking good this was

The Silence of the Lambs (1991) | ★★★★★

a fantastic, gorgeously filmed power play between two powerhouse actors, with a quality feminist narrative underlying it all. Jodie Foster has so much agency as a character in this, I am crying. also, the psychological horror; I was creeped out of my mind without a single jump scare. also, CINEMATOGRAPHY.

I will say that this movie is really transphobic [like… bruh]. I wrote a good review for this here.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017) | ★★★

One of my new favorite MCU movies. kind of a weird to eh first half but the last 30 minutes of this were, straight-up, so fucking awesome in so many ways. thematic conclusions and four very likable lead characters with one of my new favorite action sequences and also, Taika’s humor planting and payoff. it has that very Taika tone problem but dude, this is just… one of the few current superhero movies I consider worth seeing. and it’s certainly memorable.

other movies I watched: Brokeback Mountain ★★★☆☆, Jennifer’s Body ★★★★☆, The Birds ★★★☆☆, Kubo and the Two Strings ★★★★☆, Coco [rewatch] ★★★★★, Set It Up ★★★★☆, Mission Impossible Fallout ★★★☆☆
total movies: 10

 —TV Shows I Watched

love these overdramatic bisexuals

Black Sails (2012-2016) | ★★★

I am slowly trudging through the very interesting but convoluted but also gay Black Sails! I’m only about five episodes in, but I’m already enjoying it. The characters are so well-done and well-acted. I haven’t been totally engaged so far, but I have a really good feeling about where it’s going [and Maxanne is already killing me].

no, I’m not kidding

The Bachelorette (2018) | ★★★

I started this to bond with a friend who’s really into it, and also because I was curious, and I’m now invested? yikes? I think I know who wins, and… not hyped. I mean, I love Becca and I would kill for her happiness, and I’m okay with literally any of the top four BUT this one particular guy, who is an asshole. because of the social media thing oh my god Elise it’s still just a rumor that he won

also I really fucking hate being this person but… Jason for Bachelor there I Said It

tv shows I’m in the middle of: Community, Queer Eye, The Good Place, Sense8
episodes watched: like, fourteen of the bachelorette, and then literally two of anything else. yikes

How were your months? Any tv shows or movies on here you’ve seen? Any thoughts or favorites? Any goals you achieved? Let me know in the comments!

Bleachers is one of my favorite groups of all time, and that album is literal musical perfection. I saw them in concert back in 2014, at some tiny Halloween show in Atlanta, and I got to be right up against the stage in front of Jack – literally cried three times during their set. It makes me so happy to see other people appreciating them. (Fun fact, since you mentioned Taylor, too – Jack writes a ton of her music!)

Oh I have to admit I am a bit sad you didn’t get to watch the second season of The Good Place – I love this show so, so much. I hope you’ll get to continue it soon, it’s so much fun to watch!
Congratulations though on writing 10K, that’s huge! I hope your writing projects are going well 🙂
I love that Taylor Swift album so, so much – All Too Well is the perfect song, it is one of my favorite song of all times and the lyrics are sooo perfect just as well ❤

Love the pictures! Also, you wrote for 10 hours? Straight? By the way, do you have any blog/goodreads tips? I just got Edelweiss and my first 2 requests were denied. 😢 so I looked at my stats and there pretty pathetic. So any tips on how to get more views/followers?

no, the k means thousand – I wrote 10,000 words on my draft! not all at the same time 🙂

well, it took me a really long time to get to so many followers and stuff – two and a half years so far!! i have to posts on here, one called “how to read more” and one called “how to write great reviews” [i think?] so you can search a couple keywords from those in my blog. make your goodreads account public, for sure. and make friends! like, if someone is commenting on your reviews, feel free to dm them. don’t be too pushy about it, but just always be friendly. also, try to be honest about your opinions [without being rude to those that like the book, obviously!] people are drawn to funny reviews, and if you show that you’re occasionally willing to just trash a book, it’ll make everyone feel more confident when you’re being positive about a book. if you’re struggling with writing a review, write down anything you’re currently thinking on a google doc or something, take a break, and come back to it.

and if you’re really struggling, have a basic format you can come back to! if i’m stuck i usually do a quote i liked, a brief but interesting summary, discussion of characters, discussion of world and plot, discussion of romance. and always end by listing your links – twitter, blog, goodreads, and instagram if you have it [i have one but i barely use it].

oh, and for Edelweiss, you have to grow your approval rating. there are some galleys on Edelweiss that you can be automatically approved for – there’s a specific section. get one of those, review it, get another of those, review it, and it’ll show Edelweiss [and especially the publishers you’ve just requested from] that they can count on you.

i might do another post like this soon – stay tuned. but yeah!

Omg I love The Handmaiden SUCH a gorgeous film and plot twists and just beautiful. I really want to read the book sometime but woot what a great adapt.

I just got into Queer Eye and watched it all and lordy teared up five or six times. I love those guys. They are just such kind people and I wasn’t expecting them to really cater their skills to what their client’s needs/budgets were?? And falling down a YouTube hole of their videos is AMAZING and the opposite of toxic masculinity and ugh my heart.

I got a friend into Schitt’s Creek and I’m now with said friend so we’re gonna watch the fourth season together which actually has like three or four episodes that just made me cry inside with tears of joy because the characters grow so much and are so fab and ships are sailing and it’s so very happy-making.

And I need to give all of Bleachers’ songs my attention, but yeah Wild Heart is so very good ❤

Hope you watch some more fab things in August!!

it’s such a great adaptation! I do want to read the book but I’ve heard the movie is even better, honestly. Queer Eye is the sweetest.

I haven’t heard of Schitt’s Creek!! gotta watch it. and oh my god, yes, listen to all of that album one day – I promise you won’t regret it.
