Hey guys, it’s Elise! Welcome back to this new segment where I ramble about upcoming releases I’m excited for and announcements in the world of books. Because I’m a mess and follow upcoming books waaaaaaay too much. I’ll start with my favorite new blurbs and announcements, and then end with a ranking of the month’s cover drops for releases on my list.
Also, I POSTED A BOOKTUBE VIDEO AND IT’S HERE.
—Adaptation & Big News—
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn had a trailer drop, and I’m actually super hyped for this? So I hated this book. [Review here.] You can find the really cool trailer here. This miniseries will be releasing July 8th, 2018, on HBO, and yeah, I’m going to watch it, because HBO, and because DIRECTOR OF BIG LITTLE LIES. I love vibes, my dudes.
The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken is having a movie made, and though I wasn’t a huge fan of this because Alex Bracken’s writing style doesn’t work for me, there’s some cool stuff in it and I’d totally be down to see this movie if it’s good! You can find the trailer here. And that is releasing this year on August 13th, 2018.
And then, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is having a movie made on Netflix. I never read this book. But I would totally be down to see this movie if it’s good! You can find the trailer here. And that is releasing this year next month.
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas had a trailer drop and that’s the news of the year because this is the only book on this list I’ve actually liked!! [Review here.] Watch It Here You Know You Want To!! This is releasing this year on October 19th, 2018.

This month was far better than last!. These are ranked in order of how much I love the covers. Worst go first, and best go last.
The Last of Her Name by Jessica Khoury, which is about Anastasia In Space, has this cover that I literally hate. it’s not good. I’m so sorry.
Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte has a cool, but slightly overdramatic cover. Idk, these crown aesthetics have kind of stopped working for me, and the blue lighting just doesn’t look very good.
Slayer by Kiersten White has a cover that I haven’t decided on my feelings about yet. Like, at all. It’s badass. And hey, Buffy, that show I still haven’t watched despite it being recommended to me upwards of two billion times. But…. it’s got a weird color scheme? Who knows, man. I’ll still read it.
Our Year of Maybe by Rachel Lynn Solomon has this aestheticy cover and I vibe! this is a contemporary about the issue of transplants and best friendship, feat. a bi lead.
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman has this cute cover. This is a webcomic I’ve been following for a few months now [although I’ve been bad at keeping up with it recently]. This cover is very cute and very gay, just like the cover. I am so happy it’s being turned into a comic and I can’t wait to buy copies and evangelize them to everyone I know.
The Past and Other Things That Should Stay Buried by Shaun David Hutchinson has this slowly-growing-on-me cover. but I do love this author a lot. also, it’s about cool queer besties [and also the past and other things that should stay buried, presumably?] and I’m excited.
Black Enough, edited by Ibi Zoboi, has this cover, and I… love the illustrations [I FEEL LIKE I RECOGNIZE THE STYLE BUT I CAN’T PLACE IT?]. But also anthology cover designers have got to stop with these awful backgrounds, oh my god? I’m sorry, but what is this shade of purple? I don’t know what would be more appealing but this is not appealing. BUT ALSO this book sounds so fantastic; it’s an anthology, all by black authors, on feelings being young & black in America.
The Dark of the West by Joanna Hathaway, which used to have an awful cover, has a decent cover now! This is still sort of generic, but definitely not awful. this is WWII historical fiction!
The Beauty of the Moment by Tanaz Bhathena has this cover with… some shoddy photoshop, but the cover model is beautiful and the animals look beautiful.
The Steel Prince by V.E. Schwab, a graphic novel series following the time before ADSOM, had this really cool cover drop. I love the white background and the shading of the foreground. So that’s fun!
The Mighty Heart of Sunny St. James by Ashley Herring Blake has this gorgeous cover. also, can I have the number of Ashley Herring Blake’s cover designer, please? I want her to know I’d give my life for her.
The Music of What Happens by Bill Konigsberg has a very sweet and cute cover, although not really my vibe. And, hey, check this out: “the novel explores the paradox of how boys are taught to emotionally armor up, but find the power to change their lives through vulnerability.” UM. YES.
We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia has a super cool cover. I love the colors of this. Also, this is basically my most anticipated of next year, so thank god; it’s about kickass latina wlw at a boarding school for girls.
Circle of Shadows by Evelyn Skye, which wasn’t even on my radar, has this really cool cover. Fun fact: I’ve actually met Evelyn Skye, and she’s one of the coolest people in the world.
Empress of All Seasons by Emiko Jean looks beautiful. I feel like this will have a badass spine? Also, knife emoji. This is a Japanese fantasy and there are Monsters and it looks badass, holy crap.
Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell has this… super cool cover. I was not expecting this book to even exist, but I love it.
Of Ice and Shadows by Audrey Coulthurst, which is the sequel to a book I have not read and don’t really plan to, has this really soft cover! Gay princesses.
I love this aesthetic so much. Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto is about girls dressing as boys and riding phoenixes, which is what i do all the time?
Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James has this lovely cover. This is a cool series drawing from African history and it looks… really cool?
The Meaning of Birds by Jaye Robin Brown got the gayest cover I have ever seen in my life. Let me explain why this cover is really gay, because it’s not just the fact that it clearly portrays two sapphics tilting their heads together. it’s that it represents the entire sapphic fashion spectrum. girl on the left has her beautiful short haircut and her FLANNEL, and her very soft butch appearance favored by high school sapphics who may possibly turn out stone butch in college. and girl on the right is actually hilarious, because that is the outfit of every femme sapphic ever, Including Me. I am not joking. she is wearing high-top pants and a crop top. I’m not saying every sapphic ever dresses like one or both of these but every sapphic ever dresses like one or both of these.
An Anatomy of Beasts by Olivia A. Cole, the sequel to a book I did not read, has this really badass cover. I am screaming at how good this is.
SO LIKE, I FOUND OUT LINGYI NARRATES AND I AM OFFICIALLY STANNING. Ruse by Cindy Pon is a sequel to Want, which I read last year and was not in love with but definitely enjoyed. One of my favorite parts was the cast of side characters, including the love interest Daiyu [my wife who I love] and the bi icon you see before you on this very cover. I was unsure if I would be reading this sequel but now it’s official, I’m going to and I think I might like it a lot more.
Sky Without Stars by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell got this absolutely beautiful cover. I JUST LOVE THIS VIBE. It’s marketed as very TLC-esque and also as a retelling of Les Mis and it just… feels right. I like it.
Shadowglass by Rin Chupeco has this cover, and I honestly want to cry from how beautiful this is. I think this series is so gorgeous I might start it just for the aesthetic.
This……… is one of my favorite covers of all time ever. I actually think the color scheme of this is one of the prettiest things ever. Dealing in Dreams by Lilliam Rivera has a blurb I do not fully understand, but is described as “the Outsiders meets Mad Max” and I have no idea who comes up with these, but they know exactly what I want out of literature.
Are any of your most anticipated on here? Comment down below if you’re anticipating any of these or found new books to anticipate! I want to hear from you.
