This new format of rambling about my life? Really working for me. Really, really, really working for me. Without further ado:
So this was the first month of my year, and I went to Paris!! Which was a lot of fun. I went to Pride with my girlfriend! And I saw my grandma, which was a lot of fun.
I will say that I was… really unproductive this month.
So here are some positive things:
- I did get my grades back, and they fucking rocked.
- I aced AP Latin, that class I’ve been complaining about on here all year!
- I got into a summer writing program at Smith college!
- I read a decent amount for me finally, despite a bad first week!
- I scheduled all my end-of-the-year posts on time!!
- I cleaned out papers at my mom’s house that had been there since second semester of my sophomore year!! and my filing system works now!!
- I maybe filmed a booktube video!!
- I caught up with my goodreads reviews!!
- Finish season one of Black Sails.❌ [super close!!]
- Finish season one of Queer Eye.✅ [thank god]
- Finish season one of Troy: Fall of a City.✅ [fucking finally]
- Finish writing short story.❌ [so close]
- Finish BooktubeSFF reads.✅ [barely, but holy shit, right?]
- Finish season two of the Good Place.❌ [IT WASN’T ON HULU SO I WATCHED COMMUNITY INSTEAD.]
- Start up Duolingo Spanish.❌ [yikes]
- Clean out Google Photos.❌ [super close!!]
—Next Month’s Goals—
I actually came up with a whole summer goals list, so I guess we’ll put a few things to advance that?
- Finish writing short story.
- Finish cleaning out Google Photos.
- Put up two booktube videos.
- Finish organizing room at dad’s house.
- Finish season one of Black Sails.
- Finish season two of the Good Place.
- Watch five movies.
- Write 10k on new project.
- Practice guitar for five hours.
- Write for ten hours.
My music taste was basically all over the place recently. The beginning of the month had a lot of Hayley Kiyoko. The middle had a lot of Taylor Swift’s Red. And the end had a lot of Marina and the Diamonds’ Electra Heart.
—Movies I Watched—
The Death of Stalin (2018) | ★★★☆☆
This is one of the darkest comedies I have ever seen in my life, and though it was… occasionally kind of funny, it really was not the best ever. Like, I think this would have not been on my movie page if I had actually watched movies this month. Not awful, but disappointing and a little bit hard to watch [it is seriously some fucking dark humor, and I think the fact that it’s about real events made that hard to deal with.]
The Blair Witch Project (1999) | ★★★★☆
so this was terrifying. I’m not into horror movies but it’s a really fucked-up movie, and it really nails the sense of never seeing the horror, but knowing it’s there nonetheless. it is also shot like a youtube video, which is interesting and kind of fun. and it invented a genre of horror! so that’s worth appreciating, obviously. great acting jobs & pretty well-done psychological horror.
Deadpool 2 (2018) | ★★★★☆
This movie got a very, very long review on Letterboxd. Highlights: a reasonably good job done of balancing SEVERAL main characters and plotlines and conflicts, all the narratives feel a little separate but come together well in the end. was this literally Marvel’s first in-movie gay character? that’s sad. but also I love her. Domino. I loved how the villains of this movie were all personal demons, there is literally no “big bad” and I absolutely LOVE when there’s no big bad. a lot of heart, just like movie one, but a totally different character arc and development. they don’t go back on any of Deadpool’s development and I love that. but unfortunately: the thing that happens in the first ten minutes is… tropey. and bad. and they do it fairly well for what it is, but it’s still the most boring trope ever, and used on a character I REALLY ADORED, and I think I literally promo’d Deadpool 1 off not using that trope, and I’m just… angry my dudes. So those are my thoughts.
Dirty Computer (2018) | ★★★★★
this has all the good vibes of San Junipero along with just as many fantastic social messages and thoughts. also it’s about romantic love between two black women, and possibly also polyamory, saving the world, and i think that’s beautiful
Arrival (2016) | ★★★★★
that was REALLY COOL. like it had a lot of slow moments, but the general concept is basically a mindfuck [please go in blind] and carefully plays with and subverts common media tropes. Amy Adams plays her role quite well. the entire conceit of this is essentially “humanity’s capacity for goodness is what will save it in the end” and also “knowledge is key”. absolutely loved the focus on linguistics. love the design of the aliens and the creativity of the premise. an absolutely A+ movie god bless
Atonement (2007) | ★★★★★
you cannot end a movie like this
Okay, so this movie is really visually and technically brilliant, and plays with narrative structure and protagonist in a way that perfectly suits the story. but also because it gets at an emotional core with some fantastic characters. Kiera Knightley’s character is fantastic, so well-acted and performed and in general, an icon.
—TV Shows I Watched—
Troy, Fall of a City (2018) | ★★★☆☆
Finished this month. This… started so great, and went severely downhill? By the end, I was only watching to finish. Helen was such a queen in this, and the Achilles started out dislikable [obviously] but was super well-acted. I sadly did not like the way they translated the plot; it was just fucking all over the place and half the characters had no motivation. And it was so melodramatic. So many scenes of melodrama and none of them remotely good. Also, I could not bring myself to give one singular shit about Paris & Helen for the entire second half of the show.
Queer Eye (2018) | ★★★★☆
I started season one back in March, and somehow didn’t finish it till this month? This is a show about a bunch of queer guys making over other guys. Please believe the hype. The whole thing about this show is that they make over outer appearances, but then in the end, they mostly just teach the people they’re working with to care for themselves. Male culture in America, and especially heterosexual male culture, doesn’t put a lot of value on genuine self-care, and it’s so refreshing to see that. The last three were sadly not as good as you-can’t-fix-ugly dude or as guy-coming-out episodes.
Black Sails (2012-2016) | ★★★★☆
I have stalled [okay, I watched a couple eps] on the very interesting and gay Black Sails! I’m only about five episodes in, but I’m already enjoying it. The characters are so well-done and well-acted. And though I haven’t been totally engaged so far, I have a really good feeling about where it’s going.
The Good Place (2016-ongoing) | ★★★★★
Holy shirt, this show is funny. It follows a woman sent to The Good Place [basically heaven] after she dies, and then realizing she totally does not belong. Sadly I have stalled on season 2; it’s not on Hulu.
Community (2009-2015) | ★★★★☆
God bless. This show had been recommended to me a lot over the years, but it is genuinely so hilarious and funny. I love Abed, I love Troy, I like all three of the girls a decent amount, star off because I kind of hate Jeff & I really hate Old Sexual Harasser Dude.
This was such a long post. Did y’all stay with me? Probably not and that’s okay. How were your months? Any tv shows on here you’ve seen? Any thoughts or favorites? Any goals you achieved? Let me know in the comments!
