May Posts #IV // Finals and I Did Terribly on That Goal Wrap-Up

This new format of rambling about my life? Really working for me. Really, really, really working for me. Without further ado:

So this month was basically just fucking finals. And AP week. I took four AP tests this year [only two AP classes, though] so that was a stressful two weeks. I felt super good about my AP Lit exam! Like, I feel comfortable in my ability to have gotten a 4 or 5. AP US History went well, despite me, um, not having taken that class. AP Latin went shockingly well [I suck at that class]. AP Lang [which I also did not take, hahahaha send help] got delayed like a week because they RAN OUT OF TESTS, but I felt good about it. I also took three finals, in Math, History, and Biology, and felt quite good about all of the above.

I also performed my shows! First came Oliver! in which I was that old lady who shows up and then dies. And then a lady who shows up, screams super loud, and leaves. So glorified ensemble, but it was a lot of fun. Second came the world premier of Original Gay Robot Musical, which was so amazing and quality.

Um… let me think some more. I had a sleepover and watched the royal wedding? I might have a new life now?

There was the soundtrack of Mean Girls the musical, which I saw live last month. This soundtrack actually pisses me off a little bit because it needed editing [Stop. what was that shit.], but also… some jams on there!! Aka everything I listed [notice how much Barrett Wilbert Weed?]

And also, flashback to Natasha Pierre and the Greatest Comet of 1812. And also I was listening to Taylor Swift again, which we should just not talk about. Let’s pretend it’s 2010 and this is what we’re all doing.

Movie To-Watch List
Letterboxd Film Diary

My month in movies was… actually amazing? I mean, I was sick for a bunch of it, hence the four-new-movies-in-three-days thing, but oh well.

The Greatest Showman (2017) dir. Michael Gracey | ★★★☆☆

I actually wrote a full review with all my complex thoughts on this show, so you can feel free to check that out. Basically, it was really fun but terrible. And a day after I finished it I literally had the thought “what was that movie I watched where Zendaya was really pretty?” So that’s my review. And the music was way better than La La Land, which had awful music, by the way.

The Last Five Years (2014) dir. Richard LaGravenese★★★★★

This was so well acted that it felt like a better movie than perhaps it actually was. The two leads just killed me. Also, I love the music. I think a lot of my love for this was just never having seen the show version before.

A Quiet Place (2018) dir. John Krasinki | ★★★

holy shit. um, psychological horror with less of the empty-jump-scare aspect and more of the imagine-living-like-this aspect is really appreciated.

so the main thing here is that this movie is kind of terrifying but forces you to engage with the narrative, with the utter hopelessness of the situation. it is impossible not to empathize with the leads, who feel like very real and dimensional and smart people stuck in an awful situation [the acting helps]. also, the ending…. was…. so good….

my main complaint is… a spoiler. highlight to read:
the alleged Weakness of the alien creatures is easy to figure out, and there’s a really bad thing that essentially occurs because a certain character TURNED IT OFF, and as an audience member that is so incredibly frustrating! I should not feel smarter than the characters, especially when the rest of the movie is driven by very competent main characters [i love competency].

Still a fucking awesome movie, though.

Troy, Fall of a City (2018) | ★★★

This… started so great, and kind of went downhill? I love the humanizing of Helen [Helen defense squad since 2k15]. Like the Odysseus, love Alfie Enoch as Aeneas [iconic casting choice being totally underutilized], love the Achilles. Hate Menelaus as he deserves. why is Agamemnon not completely terrible in this. There was polyamory at one point and it was out of nowhere but it actually worked… really well for the narrative and the story as told? so blessed so moved so grateful at the gay agenda working in my favor for once.  but it kind of went downhill with the focus on Paris, who becomes less and less sympathetic over time.

love these overdramatic bisexuals

Black Sails (2012-2016) | ★★★

I have totally stalled on the very interesting and very gay Black Sails! I’m only about five episodes in, but I’m already enjoying it. The characters are so well-done and well-acted. And though I haven’t been totally engaged so far, I have a really good feeling about where it’s going.

icons, all of them

The Good Place, season one (2016-ongoing) | ★★★

Holy shit, this show is funny. It follows a woman sent to The Good Place after she dies, and then realizing she totally does not belong. The ending left me incredibly shook even though I knew what was coming. I just love everything about this.

This was such a long post. Did y’all stay with me? Probably not. It’s okay. How were your months? Any tv shows on here you’ve seen? Any thoughts or favorites? Any tips for achieving goals? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Hahaha the shows you were in sound so much fun 😂 I’m glad your finals went well! I’ve had exams lately too, I can’t wait for them to be over…
Hey, I’m going to Paris this summer too, that’s a cool coincidence 😂

  2. I really need to watch Queer Eye and The Good Place, I keep putting them off because of school which is not ideal. And I had a flashback to those very same TSwift songs and they’re still good. ALSO, I hope you love Paris, I was there like five years ago and I loved it.

  3. Ooh, I love the Good Place!
It’s literally like, the only TV show I’ve watched all year (I’d rather be reading tbh), but it’s just so funny and I’m obsessed! And season two is just as good as the first one!

And also yay for plays! I was in one in May too. It was called The (Almost) Totally True Story of Hansel and Gretel, and it was very weird, and half the cast was in the 8-10 age range (WHY?!?!), but it was a lot of fun still. (Except I was sick for the last two shows, with a super sore throat, so that was fun. Not.)

  4. Okay first of all I am SO SO glad that you’re watching Black Sails because it is my favourite show of all time and yet has flown under the radar of so many people (probably because it isn’t on Netflix). Anyway if you’re loving the first season (easily the weakest of the four seasons) I’m certain you will love the show, because it only gets better and gayer from there!

I felt exactly the same way about The Last Five Years! I’ve never seen a show version of it, and I’ve long had a big talent crush on Jeremy Jordan, who is just so charismatic and has that voice in everything he does, so it blew me away. I think The Last Five Years is my favourite movie musical of all time, and I listen to the soundtrack often.

Good luck with all of your goals for June!!

    1. aaaah thank you Chelsea! I’m watching Black Sails because so many of my old twitter & tumblr followers are obsessed with it 😆 you’re right, it hasn’t gotten much mainstream hype. but I can’t wait to see more!

The Last Five Years is such an excellent movie musical, I was kind of shocked by the middling Letterboxd reviews & I’m so glad you felt the same 💜💜
